Patenting in Mobile Application and Technology

The session will address the trends in patenting in mobile applications technology and when and why one must patent an invention. The session will address using competitive patent intelligence to create new products, applications and inventions, the different challenges and strategies in obtaining software patents in India, US and Europe and some case studies to clarify the patentability standards at the various patent offices. Costs, time frame, and complexities of patent systems around the world will be exemplified. Aspects of quality of searches, drafting, freedom-to-operate vs. patentability will also be discussed. The session will also address the area of developing and implementing an IP-driven strategy to foster R&D and innovation.

Mobile Application Development Conference SpeakerMs. Komal Shah-Bhukhanwala, is the Director of InnovarIP. At InnovarIP, she has developed a diverse clientele including multinationals, local Indian companies, universities and independent inventors. She also advises clients on patent strategy, patent search, patent prosecution, clearance, patent oppositions, patent due-diligence, etc. Prior to InnovarIP, she was leading the patent practice group at Nishith Desai Associates, Mumbai. There, she led and trained the group on patent matters for clients like Motorola, IBM, etc., where she worked on telecom and networking patent applications. She has also worked as a chemical engineer at Sulphur Mills Ltd., Mumbai, a mid-size agrochemical company, where she developed new formulations for reduced dosage and actively initiated IP activities at the company. She worked at Du Pont, USA, as a process engineer manufacturing health foods and also has research experience in the development of drug screening systems using small-molecule protein interactions and microarrays. Ms. Shah-Bhukhanwala holds a Bachelor’s in Chemical Engineering from Christian Brothers University, Memphis, USA, a Master’s in Biochemistry from Boston University, USA and an MBA from IESE Business School, Barcelona, Spain. She is a registered to practice at the United States Patent and Trademark Office and the Indian Patent Office.

She has also been a speaker at various other conferences on intellectual property such as CPhI, CII, Bangalore Nano, etc.
